Four Ways to Communicate Without Saying A Word

Our latest ALEX AND ANI | CHARITY BY DESIGN® partnership is with the American Stroke Association (ASA). A stroke is a largely treatable and preventable health condition occuring when blood supply to the brain is interrupted, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die, and without prompt treatment, serious consequences can occur like difficulty talking, muscle paralysis, memory loss, even death.

The good news: Because of medical advances and increased awareness (thanks to organizations like the ASA), fewer people die of stroke today than they did 15 years ago. If someone in your life has suffered a stroke, you know that communicating can be difficult for them. And when you’re the caregiver of a stroke survivor, it can be hard to know the best way to communicate back. For tips on expressing ourselves without words, we sought inspiration from the #1 New York Times bestselling book by Gary Chapman, The Five Languages of Love.

_____

1. Provide an act of service

Cooking a homemade meal. Cleaning the house. Walking the dog. Daily chores can be difficult and time-consuming for most people—let alone someone recovering from a stroke. Be creative in thinking of how you can help with responsibilities. Volunteering your time speaks volumes about your commitment and caring.

2. Use physical touch

We’ve all felt that spark of loving energy when a friend holds our hand in support or a loved one offers a hug after a long day at work. Why not pass it on? Start small and keep personal boundaries in mind, especially when it comes to stroke survivors. Per the recommendation of the ASA, if they feel comfortable, massage common stress points like the forehead or feet.

3. Spend quality time

This means full, undivided, attention. Power down iPhones, iPads, TVs and anything else with a screen. With distractions gone, you can focus on quality activities. What is their favorite thing to do? The more specific and thoughtful you are, the more heartfelt the experience.

4. Give unexpected gifts

When it comes to material things, meaning and thoughtfulness are what makes them memorable. Consider purchasing the Wings of Change Charm Bangle, which will promote stroke awareness and benefit the American Stroke Association. To extend the delight, let them open an envelope with the meaning card inside first, so you build anticipation before they open the box and behold the beauty of the bangle itself.
